Description
Kangiryuarmiutun is spoken in the community of Ulukhaktok (formerly called Holman) on Victoria Island, in the Northwest Territories. Kangiryuarmiutun and the varieties of the language spoken in Western Nunavut in the communities of Qurluqtuq (Kugluktuk) and Iqaluktuuttiaq (Cambridge Bay) form the Inuinnaqtun dialect. This in turn is part of the Western Canadian Inuit dialect group, which includes Siglitun, Natsilingmiutut and Utkuhiksalingmiutitut. These dialects are part of the Inuit (or Inuktut) language—a continuum of dialects that extends across the North American Arctic, from Greenland in the East to Alaska in the West. The Inuit language is part of the Eskimo-Aleut language family, which also includes Yupik languages and Aleut, spoken in Siberia and Alaska. Ulukhaktok is part of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, which also includes the communities of Aklavik, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, and Tuktoyaktuk.
